CARNEROS DISTRICT

The Joining of Napa and Sonoma

Some would argue that Napa and Sonoma are decidedly separate but then comes our wine country to the south. The Carneros District is the place where Napa Valley and Sonoma connect. The Eastern half is the base of Napa Valley and the Western portion leads into Sonoma Valley. It is the gateway to both wine countrys’ and the access to the mouth of the river system that eventually flows down into San Francisco Bay. It is much cooler here than in the thick of the valleys, a softer warmth of day and a milder earlier evening. Champagne grapes like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow nicely here and are the predominant vineyard choice.

The Carneros District has become a popular place to tour. It is the closet AVA (American Vinicultural Area) to San Francisco, claiming the lowest position but just in geography, not in rank. Master Wine Tours recommends the Carneros District, there are some real gems here.
