NAPA VALLEY AVA

AVA or Appellation

The word appellation, synonymous with the Term AVA (American Vinicultural Area) is attempt to help understand the wines produced in a specific area.  Analyzing where grape varietals grow better and what effects certain characteristics in the fruit. Certain grapes are more temperamental than others. The there’s the debate of whether the stressing the vines might contribute positively to the wine. Some of your favorite wineries will own and lease grapes from different appellations because of the terroir characteristics of that area. All of this can be layered and thick at times. But the juice is so good and we like it so much, we just want to figure it out. LOL.

Napa Valley was the first AVA.  Since it’s designation, it was been further subdivided into many appellations (AVAs). The soils, the weather, the microclimates and the elevations all play a part in determining the boundaries of an AVA. There are now 16 AVAs from the floor of Napa Valley and up the mountain sides.
